Ten-year-old orphan Peter Augustus Duchene encounters a fortune teller who tells him that his sister, who is presumed dead, is in fact alive and that an elephant will lead him to her. Though there are no elephants in Baltese, that very night, a magician, attempting to conjure a bouquet of lilies, accidentally conjures an elephant, setting off a series of adventures as Peter desperately searches for his sister.
